| 10:00-10:30 | Rethinking typography as a field in Turkey Özlem Özkal | ΤΟΥΡΚΙΑ Having graduated from METU Industrial Design Department, Özlem Özkal has received her MFA and PhD degrees in Bilkent University, Department of Graphic Design. She taught graduate and undergraduate classes in typography, graphic design, design foundation and visual studies in METU, SMFA-Boston, Tufts and Bilkent Universities. She co-founded Tasarımhane Design Co. and worked as a creative director in between 1995-2003. Her fields of research are typographic design and history – in particular, the Ottoman print culture; visual communication, and design education. She is currently teaching at Özyeğin University, Dept of Communication Design in Istanbul.
Onur Yazıcıgil is a typographer and educator who currently lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey. He received his MFA from Purdue University in the USA. He has spoken at TypeCon, ATypI, TypoBerlin, and lectured on various topics in the field of typography. At the present, he is a faculty member at Sabancı University. He developed a humanist sanserif typeface, Duru, with partial availability on Google Web Fonts. In addition to his research in Latin typefaces, he has been most focused on the Ottoman metal typeface production of the 19th century, in particular Ottoman naskh typefaces. Since 2011 has been the co-creator and co-organizer of the ISType conferences.

She is an art historian and editor who contributes numerous publications about Cary Collection holdings, including those about graphic design, calligraphy, wood type, and typefounding. As manager of the Cary technology holdings, she is responsible for teaching and maintaining some 18 different presses and several hundred fonts of metal and wood type. As a freelance designer she has received prestigious awards at home and abroad, and was awarded PhD at the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK). She is the author of numerous articles, exhibitions, she initiated conferences, workshops and lectures and worked for the Brumen Foundation. Together with dr. Barbara Predan they established book series Zbirka 42. She is the Slovenian representative of the Association Typographique Internationale (AtypI), co-founder of the Institute of Design and a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. |

In October 2012, she defended her PhD (Type Design for Children with Low Vision), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerard Unger. She was granted two scholarships by Microsoft.She works as a researcher at PXL-MAD (Media Arts & Design), where she also teaches graphic design, typo and type design. Recently she was awarded a grant from Microsoft for a project on visual prosody. Ann was a finalist in the ‘New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2015’ competition, which recognises early career researchers in the sciences. Recently Ann set up a Research Institute called READSEARCH. Ann is also involved in European COST Action that studies the evolution of Reading in the age of Digitisation. She has presented papers and gave workshops on several occasions both in Belgium and abroad.Ann is (since 2013) also an award winning independent designer. In 2014 she designed a postage stamp for the Belgian postal company that contained 606 words, a Guinness World Record. |

Her research interests include the uses of nationalism in design, design in relation to technology, and the history of dress; she has published and lectured widely on these topics. She has extended research and practical experience in socially engaged and pedagogical art practices with a focus on conflict related contemporary art practices and dialogical structures within the context of divided cities. She has worked, exhibited and collaborated with various galleries and museums in London, El Salvador, Cyprus, Greece, Mexico and Brazil, such as the Municipal Arts Centre in Nicosia, the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, October Gallery in London, the Modern Art Museum of El Salvador, and the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, amongst others. |

The founder of design agency Brody Associates, he established his reputation as creative director of the 1980’s Face magazine, subsequently working with record labels, magazines and a range of international clients including Apple, BBC online, The Times, Channel 4 and the England football team. His hugely influential work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and publications, most notably the two-volume monograph The Graphic Language of Neville Brody, which was accompanied by an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Wibo Bakker (1974) works as assistant professor at the Industrial Design department of the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (Suzhou, China). He is specialized in design history, graphic design and creativity theory. Lately he has become interested in information design and pictograms, carrying out research in the Netherlands, England, Germany and Japan. Bakker started his career studying graphic design at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem (1991-1996). An internship at Pentagram Design (San Francisco), as well as jobs at several other design agencies, made him aware of national differences in design cultures. In 2009 he obtained a PhD at Utrecht University for his study on the development of visual identity in the Netherlands, titled ‘Droom van Helderheid: huisstijlen, ontwerpbureaus en modernisme in Nederland: 1960-1975’ (A Clear Dream: Visual Identity, Design Agencies and Modernism in The Netherlands: 1960-1975). |

She has a PhD in College of Engineering and Design at Brunel University, UK. Her research interests include cognitive style, visual design, interface design and user experience. Kun-Fan Lin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Commercial Design at Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan. He has a PhD in Design at Nihon University in Japan. He writes several books about ancient Chinese fonts, and basic theory of colour. His research focuses on ancient Chinese characters, chromatology and cultural and creative design. His several visual design and packaging design works have been awarded by Red Dot and iF in 2014. |

She also volunteered in the Joomla! community for many years before becoming the Joomla! Brand Manager in January 2014. Her work is extremely creative, emotionally involving, detail-obsessed, and rich with colorful illustrations that come from her imaginary world. She describes herself as a typography addict and lover of colors. |
| 12:00-12:30 | Dance Typography: a study of how sound and movement can inspire, enrich and awaken the creative process in typographic and visual communication projects Μαγδαληνή Παπανικολοπούλου | ΕΛΛΑΔΑ Magdalena Papanikolopoulou holds a Professional Doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of East London. She was previously a graphic-typographic designer and is now an active artist who creates site-specific performative works, installations, live performances and videos that explore language, written words and typographic forms and allow free expression through calligraphy, speech and body movement. Her concerns revolve around the use of text and language in contemporary art, both semiologically and visually. She experiments with the relationship between body and letter by using letters as objects. She explores movement as dance and how text and words can create a visual poetic language. Dr Papanikolopoulou is the creator of the ‘Dance Typography’ workshop presented in Cyprus, the USA, and Greece. Its goal is to combine dance, movement and typography to help stimulate the minds and bodies of developing graphic design students, as well as anyone who wants to further explore the origins of their creativity. She is a full-time lecturer of graphic design at the Technological Institute of Athens. She is a graduate of the London College of Printing and the Vakalo School of Art and Design. Magdalena lives on the island of Aegina in Greece and has exhibited widely in museums, art and performance festivals and galleries, including Gallery Genesis in Athens, the AVA Gallery in London, O3ONE Art Space in Belgrade, and ArToll in Germany. |

She further specializes in Cultural Policy and Management and she has curated a number of individual and group art exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece, Germany and the UK. She has a degree in the History of Art from the Department of History, the Lomonosov Moscow State University. From 1975 to 1988 she has worked at the Institute of Art Studies, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where she defended her PhD (1982). From 1989 to 2004 she joined the Institute of Folklore at the same Academy. Since 1997 she holds a teaching position at the Interior and Furniture Design Department, the University of Forestry, Sofia, where she teaches Art and Design History. In 2015 she was awarded a ScD Diploma from the New Bulgarian University for her book “Art in Design”. Dr Lozanova is the author of more than 110 research articles and 4 books as well as the co-author of 2 books. Stela Tasheva graduated from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia, in 2001. She defended her PhD thesis on “Semiotics of Architectural Graphics” at the Institute of Arts Studies, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in 2012; three years later she was offered there the position of Associate Professor. She is the author of the book “Problems and tendencies of Bulgarian architectural graphics in the 20th Century” (2014). Her practical activities include participation in projects of residential and public buildings, either developed individually or as a teamwork. Dr Tasheva is a member of ICOMOS, the Bulgarian Chamber and the Bulgarian Union of Architects. |

Εργάστηκε στη βιομηχανία κατασκευής τυπωμένων κυκλωμάτων “ΜΕΤΕΛΚΟ ΑΕ” και στην Ερευνητική Εταιρεία “Nanovive SA”. Εργάστηκε ως εργαστηριακός συνεργάτης στα ΤΕΙ Αθήνας και Πειραιά. Συνεργαζόμενη ερευνήτρια στο ΕΚΕΦΕ “Δημόκριτος” στα πλαίσια ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων με αντικείμενο τη σύνθεση και τον χαρακτηρισμό υλικών. Το ερευνητικό της αντικείμενο σήμερα είναι η σύνθεση αγώγιμων μελανιών. Έχει δημοσιεύσει περισσότερες από 20 εργασίες σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά με κριτές και έχει συμμετάσχει σε περισσότερα από 20 διεθνή και ελληνικά συνέδρια. |

Ο Μερκούριος Μαργαριτόπουλος είναι πτυχιούχος του Τμήματος Μηχανικών της Σχολής Ικάρων (Σχολή Μηχανικών Αεροπορίας–ΣΜΑ) και του Τμήματος Εφαρμοσμένης Πληροφορικής του Πανεπιστημίου Μακεδονίας, ενώ έχει ανακηρυχθεί διδάκτορας στο ίδιο Τμήμα. Έχει διδάξει στη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση μαθήματα Πληροφορικής και στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση «Πληροφοριακά Συστήματα» στο Τμήμα Λογιστικής του ΤΕΙ Σερρών και «Τεχνολογίες Ανάπτυξης Συστημάτων» στο Τμήμα Διοίκησης Τεχνολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Μακεδονίας. Υπηρετεί στο Εθνικό Κέντρο Δημόσιας Διοίκησης και Αυτοδιοίκησης ως Προϊστάμενος του Περιφερειακού Ινστιτούτου Επιμόρφωσης Θεσσαλονίκης και είναι φοιτητής στο Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα Σπουδών «Γραφικές Τέχνες–Πολυμέσα» του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου. |

| 12:30-13:00 | Υλικά συσκευασίας: Καινοτομίες και τάσεις εξέλιξης Ελισάβετ Γεωργιάδου | ΕΛΛΑΔΑ Η Ελισάβετ Γεωργιάδου, εκπαιδευτικός, είναι πτυχιούχος του τμήματος Τεχνολογίας Γραφικών Τεχνών του ΤΕΙ Αθήνας, και κάτοχος των ακαδημαϊκών τίτλων Master of Arts in Communication & Image Studies, University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, 1995 και PhD οn Educational Hypermedia, De Montfort University, UK,1998 (με υποτροφία του Ιδρύματος Κρατικών Υποτροφιών). Διδάσκει στη δευτεροβάθμια και στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευσης (Ελληνικό Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο) γραφικές τέχνες, επικοινωνία και πολυμέσα στα οποία αντικείμενα διαθέτει εκτεταμένο δημοσιευμένο ερευνητικό έργο. Ο Τριαντάφυλλος Μουλλάς, αποφοίτησε το 1998 από το πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield με πτυχίο Ηλεκτρονικού Μηχανικού (κύκλου τηλεπικοινωνιών). Το 1999 απέκτησε Μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο από το πανεπιστήμιο του Bradford στο Radio Frequency Communications Engineering και το 2014 απέκτησε το μεταπτυχιακό δίπλωμα ειδίκευσης στις Γραφικές Τέχνες-Πολυμέσα από το Ελληνικό Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο με διπλωματική εργασία πάνω στα Σύγχρονα υλικά συσκευασίας, τμήματα της οποίας δημοσιεύτηκαν σε κλαδικά περιοδικά των Γραφικών Τεχνών. Από το 2001-2007 εργάστηκε στην εταιρία SIEMENS ενώ από το 2007 έως σήμερα εργάζεται στο υπουργείο Άμυνας στο ΓΕΣ, σε στρατιωτικά εργοστάσια. |

| 16:30-18:00 | Panel Discussion | Collaborative processes in type design Liron Lavi Turkenich | ΙΣΡΑΗΛ Liron Lavi Turkenich is a type designer and researcher based in Israel. She holds a BDes in Visual Communication from Shenkar college in Tel Aviv and an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading. Laura Meseguer is a freelance designer based in Barcelona, Spain. Her activity is developed in the field of commercial work and personal projects. She specializes in any kind of project based on typography, from lettering to book design, consultancy and teaching. Through her own digital foundry, Type-Ø-Tones, she releases and promotes her typefaces. In 2003–2004, she enrolled the post-graduate course ‘Type]Media’ at KABK in The Hague. She is the author of the book TypoMag. Typography in Magazines, and co-author of “Cómo crear tipografías. Del boceto a la pantalla”. At the moment she is part of the Typographic Matchmaking III, the multi-script typographic research project of the Khatt Foundation. Luisa Baeta is a freelance graphic and type designer currently living like a nomad between London, New York, Rome and Rio de Janeiro. After working for a few years with graphic design in Brazil, she did a post-graduation in visual communication at the London College of Communication and later got a masters degree in typeface design from the University of Reading (UK). She then worked for three years as a font designer at the London-based type foundry Dalton Maag, on several Latin and non-Latin projects, including her own typeface, Bligh. Bianca Berning is a font engineer with a background in civil engineering, communication and typeface design. After completing her MA in typeface design in Reading in 2011 she joined Dalton Maag, a London-based type foundry. She now heads the Skills & Process team, a multidisciplinary team of typeface designers, font engineers and software developers, that is responsible for the implementation of internal standards and the improvement of Dalton Maag’s font development processes. Alessia Mazzarella is a typeface and graphic designer from Italy currently living in the United Kingdom. She graduated with distinction from the MA in Typeface Design, the University of Reading (2013), received a BA in Graphic Design from Central Saint Martins, London, and a BA in Graphic and Multimedia Design from Sapienza, the University of Rome. She now works independently on typeface design and graphic design projects. During the MA she developed her interest in multi-script typeface design, focusing her research on Odia and Gurmukhi scripts.
