The University of Macedonia Press
The UOMPress was established after a decision of the University of Macedonia Senate in June 2001. Actual work had already started in 1998, under the EEC working project called 'Bibliographical Support', when the initial team was formed and the necessary equipment was acquired. It is now housed at the ground floor of the University.

Digital and conventional educational material, as well as the design, production and print management of a large part of the University information literature, constitute part of the UOMPress activities. Furthermore, the University publishing house following an open policy goes after, not only university books and companions, but also titles of general interest (history, education, children's literature etc).

The UOMPress works towards the setting of high academic and design standards in the greek book production field. It organizes a demanding program, developing an ambitious list that already includes a number of successful titles. Moreover, the UOMPress is heavily involved with research and education as far as typography and communication is concerned.
Some of the UOMPress 'peripheral' activities include the organization of the '1st meeting of the Greek University Publishing Houses', the establishment -every two years- of the event called 'International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication' (ICTVC), the running of seminars on innovative printing technologies, seminars concerning the theory of typography and the history of graphic communication, as well as the participation to national book fairs and book presentations.

Among the UOMPress plans is the establishment of a short course on 'typography, communication and new media', which will start in 2004 at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.

Altervision, typography and visual communication ltd
Altervision was established in the beginning of 1997 by a team of people whose relationship with typography and visual communication goes fairly back in time. This relationship, bearing different characteristics for each member of the team, covered a wide range of applications and interests in the graphic communication field, from design production and publishing to academic research and lecturing.
A series of books, an experimental design journal, articles, an academic magazine about typography, involvement in typographic education, and published research about the history and the aesthetics of Greek typography, constitute part of Altervision's production. Common experience in the educational and professional arenas, the ability to compose -in a creative manner- different views expressed by each member, and the need to face new challenges in the graphic arts field, led to the decision to establish Altervision.

Altervision approaches every project, no matter how big, in equal terms, bearing in mind its position within a community, whose already established graphic conventions respects. However, this approach does not confine the team's experimental work, resulting in design proposals quite different in spirit from the already existing ones.

Apart from the main professional activity of typographic and design applications, Altervision aims at further developing as many as possible areas related to its interests.
