Digital Typography and Artificial Intelligence
Peter Karow was born in Stargard, Pomerania, in 1940. He studied high-energy physics at the University of Hamburg. Together with Rubow and Weber he founded the URW Software & Type GmbH. Digital type became his life's work and has continued to be a most enjoyable and exciting task to the present day. Several contacts with type designers, especially with Hermann Zapf, had great impact on the development of the IKARUS-program. Since 1988, they both have worked on the hz-progam in order to use the power of computers to improve the micro-typography of texts. Peter Karow has addressed numerous International conferences, has written many articles for journals, got 14 patents for DTP related methods, and Is the author of several books, among which: Digital Typefaces, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, eidelberg, New York, 1994; Font Technology, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, 1994; Typeface Statistics, URW Verlag, Hamburg, 1993.
