John Langdon
While my artwork has taken the form of corporate logos, ambigrams, paintings and constructions, there are a few themes which unite those several forms of expression, and almost every image I have ever created. The primary commonality is ambiguity. I experience the world as being open to interpretation, and I see that each person¹s vantage point is valid and his reality is unique. In my work I try to share with the viewer the excitement that comes from exploring multiple viewpoints.
My genetic heritage handed down to me almost equal portions of affinity for visual and verbal expression. It is, therefore, most appropriate that the visual treatment of words should be my specialty.
I managed to sidestep much of the excellent education that was offered to me, preferring my own self-hewn path to self-discovery over pre-determined roads to somewhere else. I seldom accept situations at face value.
While my earliest significant influence was unquestionably Salvador Dali, the late 60s provided a number of powerful forces: The yin/yang symbol, M.C. Escher, psychedelic poster art and lettering, and Herb Lubalin¹s highly creative use of conventional typography.
