David Shields
David Shields is an Assistant Professor in the Design Division of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. Before joining the UT Faculty in 2004, David was living in Brooklyn where he co-founded the design studio Viewers Like You and held a position as an Adjunct Professor at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. His studio, now located in Austin, Texas, provides creative consultancy for visual communications and tends toward projects involving environmental, interactive and experiential design systems. He is currently focusing on historical and visual typographic research arising from interrogations of Rob Roy Kelly's American Wood Type Collection held at the University of Texas. Shields holds a BFA from Memphis State University and a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Most recently: "Hybrid Histories," The Design Frontier, 5 Dec. 2006, AIGA Design Education Conference, Denver, Colorado. (A presentation on comparative history as a generative method.) "History of The Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection." The Collections: The University of Texas at Austin. (Essay included in collections catalog for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the University of Texas, to be published late 2007).
